2022 Summer at Breinton Season

Ticket availability for our upcoming events:
  • Ridout & Gedjieva - Saturday 11 June

We are very pleased to be able to add an additional recital to our season with an extremely exciting occasion to hear the two brilliant BBC Young Generation Artists, Timothy Ridout (viola) and Alexander Gadjiev (piano).
Timothy is much in demand as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician; he is already one of Wigmore Hall's favourite artists, despite his young age. Alexander is a prize winner of multiple international competitions; you may recognise his name as the 2nd Prize Winner of the most recent Chopin Competition in 2021.

  • Katya Apekisheva - Saturday 9 July

This indoor event will feature Katya Apekisheva, described by Gramophone Magazine as a "profoundly gifted artist". Katya has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras including the London Philharmonic and she was a prize winner at the Leeds International Piano Competition. She is not only a soloist but she also has the artistry and delicacy that makes her a sought-after collaborative pianist. A long-term friend and favourite of Breinton, Katya is returning to perform a programme of Mozart, Chopin, Szymanowski and more, all on her way to Wigmore Hall.

  • Trio Gaspard - Tuesday 26 July

For our fourth recital of the summer season, we are pleased to present Trio Gaspard. Three-time winners of major international chamber music competitions, they are now regarded as one of the most sought-after piano trios of their generation. Founded in 2010, the German-Greek-British musicians, consisting of three successful soloists in their own right, have been invited to perform at concert venues across the world as well as giving masterclasses and adjudicating competitions, thanks to their considerable teaching experience.

  • GALA: Bampton Classical Opera - Saturday 24 September 2022

For our 100th event at Breinton, we are pleased to present Bampton Classical Opera in a performance of Handel's cantata, Clori, Tirsi and Fileno.
Three singers will be accompanied by the Bampton Classical Players on period instruments in this staged performance. Come, listen and watch this spectacular while enjoying a picnic in the peaceful surroundings of our garden and also celebrate at our 100th Gala Reception.

Summer at Breinton 2021

In June 2021, we held two outdoor, Covid-Secure recitals for 250 guests at Breinton

  • Summer at Breinton: Jess Gillam, Sam Becker & Zeynep Özsuca on 13 June 2021

"...the live setting last Sunday presented Jess Gillam's true magnetic nature, literally 'infectious' personality, the enthusiasm to share her music with the audience, no hesitation to give everything to connect, bursting stamina and energy to keep going, all on top of her apparently outstanding talent and ability..."

  • Outdoor Recitals in the Garden at Breinton

  • Summer at Breinton: Consone Quartet on 19 June 2021

"The programme was utterly beautiful, ... the Consone Quartet displayed their strengths superbly; their expert collaboration, the glorious sounds of their distinguished period instruments, the precision of each and every note melting into a beautiful harmony and shape..."

Summer at Breinton 2020

With the start of the pandemic in March 2020, we had to cancel the final three recitals of the season. But, with the relaxation of restrictions in July 2020, we were able to innovate to bring five outdoor recitals to our garden for over 500 guests.

First July Recital - Fabulous Strings

Saturday 4 July 2020

Natalia Lomeiko & Yuri Zhislin, Violin & Viola

It was a liberating experience. On Saturday 4 July, the first day of freedom from lockdown, “Summer at Breinton: Fabulous Strings” was potentially the very first live, public concert with an audience for over 100 days.

The first time for the musicians to perform to real people. The first time for us to hear live music. For many, the first time to be with people from other households, albeit outdoors and staying two meters apart. The first time to feel the unusual ‘normal’ again...

Second July Recital - World Tour

Sunday 26 July 2020

Lotte Betts-Dean, mezzo soprano; Bartosz Glowacki, accordion;
Andrey Lebedev, guitar

Our second recital featured a very different musical genre but, unfortunately, the same rather dark and threatening British summer weather!

The three performers took us on a joyful and emotional ride with music from around the world. They put a smile on our face and left warmness in our hearts; this was a concert to be remembered for a long time.

Third August Recital - Third Quarter

Saturday 8 August 2020

The Carducci String Quartet
with Hannah and Katherine Dienes-Williams

Our dream combination of two violins, viola and cello was presented by the Carducci String Quartet who not only showed their bubbling energy and glorious harmony, but their indisputable togetherness, full-bodied sound making and expression, and brilliant projection.

Their programme featured Beethoven’s Serioso, so dark and dynamic, and Dvorak’s American; the contrast of personalities was striking.

Fourth August Recital - Seemingly Unlikely

Saturday 22 August 2020

Huw Wiggin, saxophone
Oliver Wass, harp

What crossed the minds of our guests during Gershwin’s Summertime, I will never know, but it had a bittersweet feeling now that this unprecedented summer 2020 is nearing the end. Fantasie Brillante sur des airs de Carmen certainly showed off the skills of both performers, then Piazzolla’s Oblivion, total beauty lingering with a bit of sorrow, to conclude Summer at Breinton, at least, for now.

Fifth & Final Recital - Inside Out with Stephen Hough

Saturday 12 September 2020

Stephen Hough
solo piano

A brave endeavour saw the pianist inside and the audience outside, but, as the first chords of Bach-Busoni’s Chaconne burst into the open air, an absolute silence prevailed in the garden. Even the birds stopped chirping; there was nothing but the piano sounds played by Stephen..

Our last outdoor concert was a truly memorable event. Even the weather was on our side, with plenty of sunshine and a very gentle breeze!
